Kathleen Hansen - Associate Director
Kathleen joined the San Diego Chapter of Sweet Adelines in 2000, just in time to make history in the International Chorus Competition by doing handsprings across the Portland Rose Arena stage, helping San Diego to win the gold medal in 2001. This fine baritone's many other talents were quickly recognized, and she soon emerged as a musical leader for the chorus. She has often directed the chorus, most notably in two international contests and for the Symphony Summer Pops concerts. In other Sweet Adeline ventures, Kathleen has served both on regional faculty teams and as a coach. As a quartet member, Kathleen has won a regional novice contest, placed third Region #21's spring competition, and was named champion of the 2004 Buckeye Invitational.
Kathleen also directs the men's Sun Harbor Chorus.
Kathleen has a Bachelor's degree in Music Education specializing in Trumpet, a teaching credential in music, and a Master's of Music in Instrumental Conducting from SDSU. She currently teaches high school instrumental and vocal music Chula Vista, where her bands have won numerous awards. She has also taught Varsity band and Beginning Conducting at SDSU. You can hear Kathleen playing her trumpet and percussion on the San Diego Chorus CD, "So Fine." The San Diego Chorus is proud to call Kathleen one of their finest!

Karen Kuisel - Assistant Director
Karen has been a member of Sweet Adelines since 1999. She joined the San Diego Chorus in 2000. Her first contest with the chorus was in Portland where her first medal of any kind, was an International Gold Medal. She has been the lead section leader for many years and is now taking on a new role as an Assistant Director.
Karen studied music at Fullerton College and before Sweet Adelines, her musical background was strictly classical. She has sung with many quartets over the years: MOTIF, Fourtune and Rhapsody (who won a wildcard bid to Nashville). Music is her passion and touching people through this vehicle is what drives her.

Ethel Lowther - Assistant Director
Ethel grew up in a musical household, and sang and danced at an early age, following in the footsteps of her father who was a professional tap dancer. She also studied piano for many years . She won the National School Choral Award as a senior in high school, and went on to the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, California where she studied piano under a renowned Bay Area concert pianist. In 1975, she visited a rehearsal of the El Camino Real Chapter of Sweet Adelines, in San Mateo, Ca, and was hooked on barbershop. She served in a variety of administrative capacities there, and also became their assistant director.
In 1982 she moved to Tucson, Arizona and joined the Tucson Horizon Chorus, again serving as both an administrative leader and as assistant director. She is a Charter Member of the Tucson Desert Harmony Chorus (formerly Tucson Goodtime) and was active in both administrative and musical capacities there as well.
Ethel moved to San Diego 6 years ago and joined the San Diego Chorus. She is active on the management team, is assistant tenor section leader, and now is pursuing her love of directing again. She has achieved Approved Director Status in the International Director’s Certification Program and is hoping to reach her goal of Certified Director this year.
For several years she also has been active in the Region 21 Arrangers Development Program and has arranged several songs, and had some of them sung by Region 21 Quartets in ADP’s Tin Pan Alley Showcase. Currently she teaches the Barbershop Basics Class to new attendees at the ADP workshops.
